Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Micronutrient deficiencies in inflammatory bowel disease: an incidence analysis

Micronutrient deficiencies associated with malnutrition in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can lead to complications including anemia, coagulopathy, poor wound healing, and colorectal cancer. This study aimed to investigate micronutrient deficiencies (copper, vitamins A, B9, E, and K) in IBD patients and highlight associated symptoms to aid in the recognition of micronutrient deficiencies.

Assessing seasonal variations of biomarkers in inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic pathologies characterized by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors, as well as aberrant immune responses. This study aimed to investigate inflammation markers’ seasonality and association with disease exacerbation episodes in patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Diagnosis and Management of Clostridioides difficile in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have an increased risk of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), which can lead to worse IBD outcomes. The diagnosis of CDI in patients with IBD is complicated by higher C. difficile colonization rates and shared clinical symptoms of intestinal inflammation.

The Role of Diet in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Onset, Disease Management, and Surgical Optimization

The concept of using diet as therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is of interest to clinicians and patients. Once considered to play a minor role, diet is now known to affect not only disease onset but may also serve as a therapeutic tool for inducing and maintaining remission and improving surgical outcomes.

Orofacial Granulomatosis and Crohn’s Disease: A Case Series

Given the rarity of this syndrome and discrepancies in the literature as to if OFG is an independent clinical entity or a subtype of CD with a distinct phenotype, we aimed to retrospectively review our institutional experience to better describe the clinical features, presentation, and outcomes of OFG in patients with CD.

Ultrasound Characteristics Can Predict Response to Biologics Therapy in Stricturing Crohn’s Disease

Stricture is a common complication in Crohn's disease (CD). Accurate identification of strictures that poorly respond to biologic therapy is essential for making optimal therapeutic decisions. The aim of this study was to determine the association between ultrasound characteristics of strictures and their therapeutic outcomes.

Crohn’s Disease–Associated Granulomatous Pancreatitis With Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

Extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease occur commonly and can lead to considerable morbidity. Pancreatic manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease have been reported to be more common in Crohn's disease (CD) than ulcerative colitis. We report a case of granulomatous inflammation in the body of the pancreas with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, which prompted a diagnosis switch from ulcerative colitis to CD.

New diagnostic strategies to distinguish Crohn’s disease and gastrointestinal tuberculosis

This review aims to summarize current available evidence on novel diagnostic techniques which have a potential to fill the gap in our knowledge of differentiating between ITB and CD.

Intestinal Ultrasound: Envisioning a New Future for Crohn’s Disease Management

The use of intestinal ultrasound (IUS) in the clinical assessment of intestinal disorders remains in its infancy in North America. We present a case in which IUS was used as a complement to Crohn's disease treatment in a 19-year-old man. After endoscopy and diagnosis, IUS was employed alongside other investigations to elucidate the extent of disease activity.

Segmental Colectomy in Ulcerative Colitis

Segmental colectomy in ulcerative colitis is associated with low postoperative complication rates, symptomatic early colitis and late colitis rates, metachronous cancer development, and the need for subsequent completion proctocolectomy. Therefore, it can be safe to consider select patients, such as the elderly with quiescent colitis and other indications, for colectomy.
